Liddell was born in Belleville, Illinois and attended Belleville High School West. As a junior, he averaged 20.8 points per game and 8.2 rebounds. He also shared the 2018 St. Louis Post Dispatch Player award with Courtney Ramey and won the Illinois 4A state championship. He averaged 20.2 points per game, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks as a senior. He won the Illinois Mr. Basketball award, the St. Louis Post Dispatch Player and Player of the Year awards, and the Illinois 4A state championship.

Liddell was a freshman and averaged 6.7 points per game. He was a part of all 31 games and was second in the team with 29 blocked shots. In a win over Illinois, he had a double-double.
In the first half of his sophomore season, Liddell contracted mononucleosis. This led to him being out for several more games. His sophomore year saw him score a record 26 points against Illinois.
